Why convert time to decimals?
Payroll and billing systems multiply hours by a rate, and that needs decimals. A 7:45 shift at $20 an hour is 7.75 × $20 = $155.00, not 7.45 × $20. Use the time card calculator or timesheet calculator to get both formats for a whole week, and the printable timesheet if you need a paper copy.
Why 0.33 and not 0.3 for 20 minutes?
20 ÷ 60 is 0.3333 with the threes repeating, so rounding to two decimals gives 0.33. Rounding to one decimal (tenths of an hour) would give 0.3, which is exactly 18 minutes, so you would lose 2 minutes. Two decimals keep the error under a single minute.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert minutes to decimal?
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 15 ÷ 60 = 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.50 and 45 minutes is 0.75. For hours and minutes, add the whole hours: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 0.75 = 7.75.
What is 20 minutes as a decimal?
20 ÷ 60 = 0.3333…, which is 0.33 hours rounded to two decimals. 40 minutes is 0.67 and 10 minutes is 0.17.
How do I convert decimal hours back to minutes?
Multiply the decimal part by 60. 0.75 hours is 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, and 7.25 hours is 7 hours and 0.25 × 60 = 15 minutes. The second converter on this page does it for you.
How many minutes is 0.1 hours?
0.1 × 60 = 6 minutes. That is why some timekeeping systems use tenths of an hour: each tenth is six minutes.
Why does my payroll show a different decimal?
Some employers round time to the nearest tenth (6 minutes) or quarter hour (15 minutes) instead of two decimals. Use the rounding choice in the converter, and ask your employer which method they use.
Is this the same as converting degrees and minutes?
No. This page converts clock time (hours and minutes) to decimal hours. Converting degrees, minutes and seconds for map coordinates uses different math.
